This is the house on Lafayette Avenue in Hingham Square Patti and I lived in for 34 years (1982-2016) and raised our 2 sons in. They lived there their entire childhoods (Alex, 1985-2004, and
Ben, 1988-2007). It was a 2/3 acre corner lot bordered by a
privet hedge on both streets.
It was built in 1903, when houses were still styled Victorian with nice moldings and wainscoting, but with modern engineering and architecture that included indoor plumbing and
electricty. The 2-story addition seen on the right in the first photo below, with the screened-porch and deck, we put on in 1991, using an
architect to keep with the style of the house. It has a family room on the first floor and the master bedroom above it, 2 rooms that were central to our lives. We have many memories of
living here but decided that with the boys grown and departed and only 2 of us here now, it was time to downsize (this 4500 sq ft house has 3 stories, 10
rooms including 5 bedrooms, 3½ bathrooms, and a dining room) and in 2015 we bought a smaller house with NO dining room and remodeled it for a year, and moved to it in another Hingham neighborhood in 2016. This house now has 3 bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms.
This house was my home a long time and it was a big part of my life and I have lots of memories, but as I write this years after we sold it and moved out, though we live in the same town we have never been back. I believe
the new (current) owners have also remodelled, so it will be interesting to see our "old" house again. Someday.
Click on the arrow buttons next to the photo for a tour of the house. The photos were taken when the house was for sale and sparsely furnished. The sectional in the living room had already been removed. There are 2 more bedrooms on 3rd floor not photographed.
